Articles of Dr Ann Blake

"Today we had yet another mass shooting in Colorado with far too many similarities to Columbine. What is even more shocking is to know this is the second mass shooting in the US this week! The other in Alabama did not seem to get as much press, perhaps because most of the 18 people he shot were in a tavern, but it too was much too similar to this same scenario as well & I would…

The Nature of Life (from www.journeyofagrownupblackwoman.com)

I wept, grief stricken about them one evening a few weeks ago. I had not cried about my deceased family members for years. My sister, one year older than I; my brother one year younger; my father and his brother and their mother; an older sister that I never knew. All dead from Huntington’s Disease, an hereditary disease in our family that took them, but for some reason, spared me.

I remember flying to or from a business meeting some years ago. As I peered out of the plane’s window, a…

What I Know to Do (from www.journeyofagrownupblackwoman.com)

If only I could see the whole picture; a panoramic view of answers and solutions laid out before me. How to make your business grow into your ideal vision? Okay, here’s step one, then step two, now step three… walk right this way. How to manifest your highest self? Well, first you do this, then that, then… don’t you see it? The path ends right over there and voila!

I could get into that.

But for this sister (and for most of us, I suspect), life does not unfold like a mural with…

What If... (from www.journeyofagrownupblackwoman.com)

A few nights ago, I did not remember I am love. I bought into the illusion that I had to verbally fight – to be mean, combative, hurtful. That I had an enemy in the form of another person who (at that moment) radiated hatred toward me. If I were a woman easily intimidated I would have retreated – and wisely so. But since I am not that woman, either easily intimidated or always wise, I matched their loathing with my own. Eyes narrowed, I spat the words, “God, I hate you”.

I am ashamed.…

Are we becoming insensitive to violence and exposing our kids to insanity without being aware of the consequence ?

I am horrified. I care about my kids. About what they eat, what they see on TV. I want them to develop their talents, their creativity, learn to play music, painting, singing, enjoy nature, be respectful, learn to communicate in a nice way. Well, I am a mother of 5 kids between the age of 19 and 6 years old.

What shocked me is that some grade 4 and 5 went to see the movie "Hunger Game" with their class after they read the book. They found it perfectly normal. I am the one who has a…

Getting in shape after 40

Getting in shape if you are older is really not a lot different than when you are younger. In fact exercise for older people is very important. You do cardio, you do weights, you eat right and you make sure that you rest between workouts. There are a few things that you have to be careful about though when you are an older person trying to get into better shape.

1. Check with your doctor first - as we get older we start to get those new aches, pains and health problems that older…
